Project in practice
Meeting with supervisor (13/12)
December, 2021 | London, England
I had my first meeting with Miriam in a group meeting before Winter break. Mim gave me some feedback on my proposal and what I should do during the Winter Break. She advised me to look at/read Nigel Thrift, Shanti Sumartojo as my project relates to place, reading Nigel Thrift will give me some direction. Shanti Sumartojo talks a lot about auto ethnography which is the methodology I intend to use for my project
During the Winter break
Based on the feedback from the proposal form, I started to look out for more practice based examples to inform my methodology. I read two designs of the year books from the design museum and a book called Cool: Style, Sound, and Subversion. This was to open myself to anything that might help me with the process of my thinking.
As this project is to investigate the impact of differences in perception of domestic Asians and nomadic overseas Asians on the way they dress punk, I tried to do some research regarding this subculture. I also read some articles such as:A Comparison between Portuguese and Chinese Punks: A Genealogy, Style, and Space;Turning rebellion into money’–An ethnography on Malaysian punk mobilities and tourism”...
At this stage, I just opened myself to anything that could influence my work. I found this book talks about David Bowie's style
Bowie's style has always amounted to more than clothes, hair and cosmetics. Style, for Bowie, is inextricable from art. It is the book he reads, the painting he buys, the film he watches.
Follow Mim's recommendation to read Nigel Thrift's, I went over some of his work. However, it was hard for me to grasp the idea. I found Thrift's work hard to understand thoroughly
